Chapter Ten

A week later…

“Dad!”

Brayden came awake to the sound of his son calling his name. He felt the bed shift under Eesai’s weight and he cracked a sleepy eye. He smiled, the sight of Eesai’s beautiful face filling him with pride and love. “Hey, kit-kit. You’re up early.”

The boy laughed. “It’s noon! Are you sick again? Should I get Rex? He has magical hands.”

Brayden sighed, figuring it was time to have that talk with him. He sat up and shuffled his hair unsure of how to begin. He patted the mattress in front of him and Eesai tucked his legs under his body.

“I need to talk to you about something, Eesai,” Brayden started, trying to remember the way his parents had approached the subject. “I wasn’t sick. Ah…when you grow up and become an adult shifter, you will start to experience what we call a heat. It’s when an omega’s body is ready to carry a baby and when an alpha is fertile. The heat only lasts a few days and happens once a year, unless an omega has a kit then the heat won’t hit until ten years or so after the baby is born. Do you understand what I am telling you?”

“You were…in heat?” he asked, his face scrunching in confusion.

“That’s right,” Brayden said, taking Eesai’s hand. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I’m sorry if I did, but I’m okay. With moving here and everything that has happened, I’d forgotten about it.”

“I’m going to get all hot?” Eesai said, picking at the blanket. “And sleep a lot?”

“The heat is different for an alpha, but you won’t have to worry about it for a few more years. Promise.” Brayden shuffled his son’s hair playfully.

Eesai shrugged. “Okay. Can I have something to eat?”

“Sure, just give me a few minutes to get up and I’ll make you something.”

Eesai darted for the living room and Brayden let out a big breath, glad the talk had gone well. He could remember being confused by his parent’s explanation too and figured he’d talked to Eesai more about it when he was older but at least he wouldn’t get scared when Brayden experienced his heat again next year. Forcing himself on his feet, he dragged himself to the bathroom to relieve himself. Through the bathroom window he could see the sun was high in the sky. He must had slept twelve hours but still felt tired. A little smile ticked at his lips—Rex had worn him out and he’d loved every minute of it. Their mating had been better than he could ever have imagined. The man had been everything he needed—gentle, sweet, loving…and playful. True to his words, he was a fox in bed. But most of all, Brayden had been comfortable. He hadn’t been afraid or ashamed that his body needed only what an alpha could provide while his heart cried out in denial. Being with Rex had felt…right.
